An industrial demonstrator for in situ by-product recovery

Upcyclink and Le Garrec SAS have launched the SOBRE project (Solution lOcale de valorisation de Biomasses pour Renforcer l’Economie circulaire), an industrial demonstrator project for the in situ recovery of by-products from the agri-food industry in general and the seafood industry in particular, supported by the Brittany region.

 

 

The origins of the project: tackling food waste

This project was born of an observation: the centralized model for recovering food loss and waste produces a balance sheet with little added value in relation to the challenges of the food system and sustainable development. Drawing on our past experience, we at Upcyclink have identified that industrialists wishing to find better economic outlets for their bio-waste often come up against a logistical obstacle. This project responds to these needs.

 

The objectives of the SOBRE project

To provide agri-food producers and processors with a high-performance local solution capable of valorizing their side-streams (residues, co-products, by-products, waste) into products of interest to the human, animal and plant food markets. This project will enable seafood players to validate the technical, economic and ecological relevance of such an approach.

 

The synergy of two innovative partners

 

This project, a winner of the Brittany region’s Inno Expé Sobriété scheme, combines the expertise of two innovative partners : Le Garrec SAS and Upcyclink.

 

Le Garrec SAS, designer and manufacturer of fluid systems, is a major player in fluid processes, tanks, industrial piping and insulation. Based in Brittany, the SME is present in France and abroad.

 

At Upcyclink, we specialize in the upcycling of secondary flows, with on-site recovery for human, animal or plant consumption.

 

Our two companies share the same concern for innovation: on the one hand, process innovation, with the constant search for improvement and the evaluation of new technologies; on the other hand, environmental innovation, with the systematic integration of environmental criteria (energy, effluents, waste, etc.) into the design of solutions, right from the start.

 

 

A unique recovery tool

 

The recovery unit will be compact, autonomous, robust and easily transportable, so that it can be brought as close as possible to the agri-residues. It will be able to test the valorization of a variety of inputs for high value-added markets.

 

After a design and industrialization phase, the tool will be operational for experimentation in the second quarter of 2024. The first tests will be carried out by seafood operators.
